The dangers of skipping dental appointments

The dangers of skipping dental appointments

The dangers of skipping the dentist due to financial pressures

Many people are skipping dental appointments due to current financial pressures, but this can lead to serious oral health problems, carrying an increased risk for additional costs in the future. At Envisage Dental West Moors we're seeing an increasing number of patients delaying their routine dental check-up and ignoring treatment requirements until they are in pain. This is concerning as regular appointments are essential to maintaining the best oral health and avoiding any problems progressing into more complex issues.

The risks of missing dental check-ups

Missing dental appointments can have serious consequences on your oral health. Without regular visits to your local dentist and hygienist, plaque and tartar and build up in those hard to reach areas, leading to decay and gum disease. In addition, many oral health problems are asymptomatic, meaning they don't cause dental pain or discomfort until they reach an advanced stage.

Delaying treatment can also lead to more expensive and invasive procedures down the line. For example a small cavity that could be easily filled will eventually require a root canal treatment or even extraction, if left untreated.

At each dental examination, your dentist will also check for signs of mouth cancer in the cheeks, palate, tongue, gums and lips. According to the latest NHS figures, around 8,300 people are diagnosed with mouth cancer in the UK each year. That's about 1 in every 50 cancers diagnosed. If mouth cancer is diagnosed early, a complete cure is often possible in up to 9 in 10 cases using surgery alone, so regular check-ups with your dentist is key.

Tips for affordable dental care

Whilst the cost of dental care can be a barrier for many people at this time, there are some options to help spread the cost of your care, making it more affordable:

  • Dental plans - signing up to a dental plan will help spread the cost of your annual routine dental care and hygienist appointments across 12 months. Many plans also offer discount on any clinically required work for plan members. Ask your local West Moors  dentist about the plans they offer.
  • Employee dental insurance/plans - review your employee benefits to make sure that your not missing out on any reduced rate plans that you may be eligible for through your employer.
  • Commit to a good home oral care regime - Ensure thorough cleaning with an electric toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste for 2 minutes, twice a day, followed by mouth wash and flossing/interdental brushing, to keep any problems at bay.
  • Take advantage of preventative care - regularly check-ups and cleaning are essential for preventing costly dental problems down the line.

I'm a new patient to this Dentist and visited three times , two were short notices to have teeth extracting , of which one was a Wisdom Tooth , they are amazing in every way there , from talking to the receptionists and especially Rami , he is exceptional at his job , very calming , explains everything is detail and a professional in his workmanship. Due to horrific past experiences all my life at Dentists every muscle in my body was tensed solid until I realised he wasn't actually hurting me on borh extraction occasions , he administered the perfect amount of anesthetic and waited for it to fully numb me. My fear of Dentists has gone now

Every person there seems to enjoy working in the practice. They are polite, professional and caring, which is a hard balancing act to achieve. They all make you feel like you're the only patient and are exceptionally well trained. Nothing is too much trouble. I recommended the practice to my colleague, Val M, and tell everyone I know how good the service is!

My first time attending this practice and I saw Rami. He has restored my faith in dentists. He and his dental nurse were gentle, considerate, and everything was explained so I understood what was happening. As soon as you walk in the practice, the reception staff are happy and smiling and then on to Rami. Can't fault the practice at all and will definitely go back.

I've been a patient at Envisage West Moors from when it was West Moors dental clinic. I always have a good experience there, whether it's a hygienist visit, a checkup or actual treatment which thankfully is rare. The team do their best to prevent treatment being necessary by giving good advice and help with good oral hygiene and practices. The reception team are welcoming and helpful, the dental staff and their assistants are all good natured, help you to feel comfortable, are skilled, attentive and knowledgable. Any treatment has always lasted the test of time and hasn't needed subsequent attention and they don't do unnecessary work. I recommended my wife to go there and she has the same positive experience.

Sevi and Sema both make me feel special and make it clear that they care about my dental health. They have a gentle touch, are thorough, attentive, skilled and give advice on how to imrove my health. They are congenial and make me feel at ease during my appointments. Their assistant is also on the ball, preempting when suction and tools are needed, looking up details online and making the appointment run smoothly.

I attended my appointment at the appropriate time, i was seen very quickly. the Dentist as always explained what was going to happen in great detail, He took X-rays and showed me the X-rays, explaining what he was showing me. He then fitted my temporary dentures and made my next appointment again explaining what was going to happen

This survey has been difficult to complete and perhaps the overall outcome is a little too positive. My husband had two appointments. The first to see Sevvy, who was his previous dentist when she was at Fordingbridge. This appointment was to get her opinion on a dental problem. The smile we were greeted with, being called by his first name, my husband relaxed immediately knowing he was in the safe hands of a dentist whose opinion he valued and in whom he had confidence. He will definitely restore his dental relationship with Sevvy! The second appointment was with the hygienist the following day at Sevvy’s suggestion, which didn’t come as a surprise. I had made it blatantly obvious that my husband suffers from anxiety, we both told the hygienist that he had very sensitive teeth. Perhaps a calmer, quieter, slower pace would have suited him best. He felt a little overwhelmed. The work on his teeth and the outcome was positive, the process was very instructive but somewhat intense. This is not a criticism. All the processes were clearly explained, he was told to put a finger up at any time, but maybe felt it would disturb the routine which he didn’t want to interrupt.
